SeeChess — Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 19, 2026

SeeChess turns a photo of a chessboard into an interactive analysis board. This policy describes exactly what data the app handles. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics SDKs, and no data brokers.

Anonymous usage statistics

The app sends a small daily ping to the SeeChess server: a random install identifier (generated on first launch, tied to nothing about you or your device), the app version, the platform (iOS/Android), and counts of feature use (e.g. how many lessons were opened). The server derives a country from the request's network address and then discards the address — raw IPs are never stored. These statistics are aggregated, first-party only, never shared, and never used for advertising or cross-app tracking. Deleting the app deletes the identifier.

Photos you submit for recognition

When you use “Analyze a photo”, the image you choose is uploaded to the SeeChess recognition server (seechess.nopatos.com) to detect the position, and the result is returned to your device.

When you confirm a recognized position (with or without corrections), the photo and the confirmed position are stored on the SeeChess server and used to improve the recognition models. If recognition fails entirely, the photo may likewise be stored so that board style can be learned. Before storage, image metadata (EXIF, including any location data) is removed — only the pixels are kept. These photos are chessboard images by nature; please avoid including anything personal in the frame. To have previously uploaded photos deleted, email us (see Contact) — we will remove them.

What stays on your device

Saved games, recent photos, your display name for offline matches, and all app preferences are stored locally on your device and never uploaded. Engine analysis (Stockfish) runs entirely on your device.

Offline matches

The “Play offline” feature connects two devices directly over a local network. Game moves travel only between the two devices; nothing is sent to any server.

Camera and photo library

The camera is used to photograph chessboards and to scan the QR code when joining an offline match. The photo library is used only when you choose an image. Neither is accessed in the background.

Data sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share any user data with third parties.
